What is Vegan?

Which diet is for you? As studies are usually publicized after the pique of trending diets, it’s a definite challenge to find what fits your lifestyle and your uniquely beautiful body.

Dear Vegans: it’s not that everyone dislikes you; it’s just that people don’t completely understand… yet. So here’s a start: Veganism is more than a dietary regimen. It’s a complex and complete lifestyle of  focused conscious consumption, with respect to a conscientious and empathetic bond with animals.

What is Veganism?

A lifestyle without consumption of animal byproducts. Dietary veganism excludes meat, eggs, dairy, and other animal substances (i.e. gelatin in Jello and puddings are from ground down cattle bones and pork skins).

PROS: May help lower cholesterol, blood pressure, increase antioxidant intake as you consume more vegetables, fruits, beans, legumes, and whole grains.

CONS: Loss of essential vitamins and nutrients– for example, B12. While there are natural, vegan sources for vitamin D and calcium, it takes awareness to keep up on healthy levels of each, if you’re not taking supplements. Veganism is also a drastic change for your body, so you have to carefully balance your necessary nutrients (do your research! listen to your body!) and wean your body into the diet.

FOODS TO EAT: Fruits, vegetables, whole grains, legumes

FOODS TO AVOID: Meat, dairy, eggs, and any animal by-product. Many kinds of ketchup have chicken broth in it, and pre-packaged orange juice often has mysterious natural flavoring that may derive from animal product.

Let’s Go On A Lunchtime Picnic:

Subway Snack: Banana Soft Serve Ice Cream (yes, we’re gonna be bad and eat first dessert… first)

Titillating Tapas: Zucchini Chickpea Fritters, sliced fruit dipped in cashew cream, and cinnamon caramelized cauliflower

Feast On This: BBQ Chicken Pizza with Ranch Dressing

Nap and Nibble: Blueberry Chocolate Chip Muffins, grapefruit sprinkled with brown sugar, and a thermos of yerba mate

After climb snack: Creamsicle smoothie and endurance crackers with hummus

Movie Time Menagerie: Carrots in tzatziki sauce, crispy kale chips, and beet tartare with cashew cheese

Not a bad meal– substantial without feeling heavy. Shall we go for a climb?
